Triton – Marine Mammal Detection System
NVTS’s Triton system is based on advanced military thermal imaging technology. The NVTS Guardian 4HD MWIR (cooled) thermal camera can operate in all weather conditions and environments, including high humidity. MWIR camera technology provides superior sensitivity and contrast with low sensor noise, resulting in high-quality images. MWIR technology delivers clearer images and greater thermal contrast than LWIR sensor technology.

Why MWIR Technology for Marine Mammal Detection?
NVTS MWIR cameras are designed for military grade long-range surveillance applications needed to detect human and vehicle threats, search and rescue, border surveillance and critical infrastructure pro- tection. Detection by passive infrared cameras, infrared radiation must travel through the atmosphere to the detector. The range of LWIR cameras is often limited by absorption, scattering, refraction of the LWIR radiation by water vapor and CO2 in the atmosphere. On the other hand, MWIR radiation travels through the atmosphere, is is less affected by absorption and scattering than the more common LWIR camera systems.
As a result, MWIR cameras provide the longest detection ranges, seeing about up to 3 times further than LWIR cameras, enabling them to detect marine mammal, humans, lobster pots, small craft, swimmers and objects up to 10 miles away.
NVTS Guardian HD MWIR Cameras can operate in all weather conditions and environments, including high humidity. LWIR cameras are more affected by humidity than MWIR cameras, making MWIR particularly suited to marine and coastal environments. Furthermore, MWIR cameras are also typically smaller and lighter than LWIR cameras with similar optics, making them the obvious choice in applications with size or weight limitations.
MWIR technology provides superior sensitivity and contrast with low sensor noise, resulting in high-quality images. Clearer images are possible with MWIR as thermal contrast is often greater in the MWIR band than the LWIR band. Furthermore, the noise equivalent delta temperature for an MWIR camera with long-range optics is typically 30-50 % better than an LWIR, resulting in sharper images.
Tracking fast moving mammals or a SOI (subject of interest) with a wide temperature range, MWIR delivers wide dynamic range with short integration times to track and visualize the target more clearly than LWIR. MWIR cameras provide superior sensitivity and flexibility, making them ideal for use with detection of marine mammals, small craft and humans.
NVTS’s Triton is a EO/IR Video Detection System that incorporates our Guardian 4HD MWIR EO/IR camera, Triton Analytic Software and powerful, ruggedized, mobile computer system in a portable hard case.
Triton’s User Interface (UI) provides ease of operation, advanced wide- area situational awareness, and marine mammal detection exceeding 4 km. Triton is designed to detect marine mammals, ships, small craft and human activity during day, night, and in fog. This gives the operator 24/7 detection capability within the designated coverage area.
The NVTS Guardian 4HD camera employs a military grade MWIR (cooled), 3-5μm, 640 x480 camera that can detect the animal surfacing, revealing parts of its warm body, exhalation or blow. The small temperature difference between the marine mammal body or blow within the sea surface provides a slight thermal contrast, which can be detected by the NVTS Triton system.
The gyro stabilized Guardian 4HD camera is designed to be mounted on a mast or pedestal. The Guardian delivers a 360-visual scan of the service area. The Guardian also has a 2.1-megapixel HD visible camera that will simultaneously give full color video during the day and in low light conditions. This combination provides the user with enhanced day/night 24/7 operational detection and situational awareness.
Video Analytics:
The Triton system can display camera location and fields of view (FOV) for rapid situational assessment. Triton analytics provides visual detection of a marine mammal or vessel with a choice of 5 user selectable unique color polarity settings in thermal mode and a 2.1 megapixel resolution color video camera for daytime and low-light conditions. Live video interface includes the ability to add and share place-markers, point and click on the screen to camera to location with distance measuring tool for mammal range once detected.
Triton’s video analytics provides detection range scale, detection gates, and nuisance alarm rates. Its multistage processing pipeline includes digital image stabilization to enhance the multi-axis gyro stabilization from the Guardian 4HD. Triton also provides shadow removal, background , object recognition and tracking during detection.
Alarming:
For each real-time alarm, the analytic screen display provides a still image, looping video, and live camera view, regardless of the camera that generated the alarm. Triton incorporates alarm querying based on a number of user specified metadata criteria.
Automated Camera Control:
When the alarm event occurs, the Guardian 4HD can automatically point to the precise location of the event.
